Family Skills Building & Support Program


This program has recently switched to a group model. We currently run three family skills building and support groups which are geared towards three different developmental stages of children and youth.

The family skills building and support program can assist families in addressing the following issues;

  • Behaviour problems at home
  • Struggles with morning or evening routines
  • Lack of follow through by children/youth when parents set limits or consequences
  • Poor communication
  • Anger/aggression
  • Argumentativeness/talking back
  • Social isolation

Group 1

Building families understanding, strengths and resiliency in the formative years

  • This group runs for 10 weeks and is for parents/guardian of children between the ages of zero to seven years of age.
  • This group covers topics like communication, positive discipline, child development and the importance of consistency and routines. The group format allows parents to learn from each other’s experience and gain support from their peers.
  • This group has an optional in home component if a family chooses this option one of the group facilitator will come to the family’s home up to seven times. The group facilitator will assist the family in taking what the techniques and strategies learned in group and customizing them into to the unique needs of the family.

Group 2

Building families understanding, strengths and resiliency in the latency

  • This group runs for 10 weeks and is for parents/guardians for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years of age.
  • This group covers topics like positive communication, child development, positive discipline, boundaries and safety. The group format allows parents to learn from each other’s experience and gain support from their peers.
  • This group is often run in conjunction with a child group component so the child also receives a group experience at the same time as the parent group.
  • This group has an optional in home component if a family chooses this option one of the group facilitator will come to the family’s home up to seven times. The group facilitator will assist the family in taking what the techniques and strategies learned in group and customizing them into to the unique needs of the family.

Group 3

Building families understanding, communication and strength in adolescents

  • This group runs for 10 weeks and is for parents/guardians of adolescents.
  • This group covers topics like communication, positive discipline, as well as rights and safety. The group format allows parents to learn from each other’s experience and gain support from their peers.
  • This group has an optional in home component if a family chooses this option one of the group facilitator will come to the family’s home up to seven times. The group facilitator will assist the family in taking what the techniques and strategies learned in group and customizing them into to the unique needs of the family.

The groups will be offered at the following times for the 2015/2016 school year.

Not all parent/guardians are comfortable in a group format, and for this reason families can choose to have an in office family skills building and support. For families that choose this option they will come to Chimo office once weekly to meet with a worker to learn skills which they will than take home and incorporate them into their families. This program will run for 12 weeks for 1 to 2 hours weekly.
